Myspace Magic: Subkicks

The latest Myspace Magic feature takes us back to the Midlands and NME-E focus on Subkicks, a high-powered quartet with a hint of Kasabian or The Music about them and who have just released their first album in the UK - 'Threes, Fives And Sevens'. Having been suitably impressed by the music available on their myspace profile (which includes a preview of each track on the aforementioned album), NME-E decided to find out a little more. Here's what James (bass) had to say in their name...

NME-E: Who are you?
Sub: We are Subkicks; Matt Bellamy on vocals and guitar, James Allen on bass, Andy Brookes on guitar and Chris Robinson on drums. We came about because me (James) and Matt are long time friends and decided to form a band, we knew Chris through mutual ugly girlfriends and found Andy in a pub somewhere in Birmingham playing a one man John Squire tribute show.

NME-E would like to reiterate that any comments made about ugly girlfriends are purely the opinions of the artists and nothing to do with the page.

NME-E: What's the name all about, then?
Sub: There's no particular reason behind our band name, just found it was the name of a tool we used when we were recording and it seemed to fit. The reason behind the name of our album 'Threes, Fives and Sevens' (released may 11th) is that it's a game we used to play in between recording sessions, involving darts, a dartboard, 24 cans of cheap lager and 12 rounds of shots!

NME-E: Can you tell us a little about your sound?
Sub: Our sound is a mix of guitar rock music with grooves and melody. We try and make our sound as big and anthemic as we can, try and blow people away with a mass of sound and energy.

Judging by what you hear on myspace, the sound is definitely big. Check it out for yourselves..

NME-E: What have you released to date?
Sub: We released a single called 'Spiders and Saints" in 2005, followed by another single in 2006 called 'The Fear'. We then released our first album, 'Exist' in Japan in 2007 and in 2008 followed it up with our second album there, 'Threes, Fives and Sevens'. This has now been released in the UK.

NME-E: You've got a few gigs coming up, so who would YOU choose to support you?
Sub: We would probably choose Kasabian to support us, having been to see them play live a number of times we've seen the power and energy they bring to a show, really make it feel like an event and thats the sort of vibe we like to put across at our shows, that this is something big and worthwhile.

NME-E: What's your favourite album at the moment?

Sub: We listen to a wide variety of music; Kasabian, Oasis' new album is mega, also liking The Courteeners and The Enemy.

NME-E: Finally, what are your plans for the coming months?
Sub: Well, we are following up the album release with a tour of the UK, then we are aiming to go on bigger and better and stronger for the remainder if the year, playing bigger and better shows and writing stronger material. Come and see us live and you'll be hooked on us!

So far I've had to make do with a sample on myspace. I don't know if I'm hooked, but I'm certainly impressed. I'm sure you will be too if you give them a chance. Check out their sounds here.

As per usual, my sincerest thanks to Subkicks for taking the time to speak to nme-europe.

If you think the album is good, you should see them live, they are amazing, total power and energy to rival any of the "factory made" bands we are told we have to like!!!
