Myspace Magic: Miss Caffeina

Hot on the heels of BenSem, the second of this week's Myspace Magic features brings us back to Spain. Miss Caffeina hail from the four corners of the peninsula (Madrid, Barcelona and Granada, no less) and offer a delightful set of delicate indie pop sounds. Coinciding with their visit to Murcia, NME-E decided to find out a little more about them. Here's what we discovered.

NME-E: So, who are you then?
MC: Miss Caffeina started rolling alost 3 years ago looking our own sound, which began by recording our first EP, 'Destrucción Creativa' (Creative Destruction) at Pig Studios in Granada. Then in May of 2007, a new bass player, Antonio, and I (drummer) joined the band, making what is now the official Miss Caffeina line up: Alberto (vocals), Sergio (guitar and backing vocals), Alvaro (guitar), Antonio (bass) and Roman (drums).

As soon as the new line up was in place, we went on a small tour of Spain, visiting Granada, Madrid and Oviedo. This gave us a lot confidence, we had a new sound now and we wanted to share it with our fans, so we went into the studio as soon as possible and recorded the EP 'En Marte' (On Mars). It was done very quickly (2 days of recording and a week of mixing) and uploaded straight to our website as a free download. Our goal was to just get it out there, and that has been our goal since then, just get the music out there. This is why 9 months later we were back in the studio to record another 5 song EP 'Carrusel', which was also released within less than a month of the first day for recording.

For both these EPs we've toured Spain pretty extensively, visiting Barcelona, Oviedo, Valencia, Sevilla, Granada, Malaga, Madrid, Zaragoza, Toledo, Salamanca, Alicante, Badajoz, Valladolid, Leon, etc...

A pretty comprehensive biography for a relatively young band.

NME-E: Is there a reason behind your name?
MC: Yeah, it's the name of a song by a classic spanish rock and roll band called Buenas Noches Rose. Alvaro and Sergio are big fans of the band and when thinking of a name for our band they liked the sound of it. In retrospect we think it also describes our music perfectly: caffeine pumped rhythms and riffs, with a soft melodic touch, like the touch of a woman :D

NME-E: Do you dare d
escribe your sound?
MC: This is hard, we like to play with sounds and textures and we're just getting started with that. Since the recordings we've done so far have been low cost, we haven't really been able to work on our studio sound much, but our live sound could probably be described as indie rock... Death Cab for Cutie, Nada Surf, Snow Patrol... I think that's kind what we're going for, as far the texture.

A quick listen to the tracks on their myspace profile gives you a clear picture of their music. "Caffeine pumped rhythms and riffs with a soft melodic touch" are certainly the order of the day. Spanish listeners will not find them dissimilar to Lori Meyers or Vetusta Morla, two of the top indie acts on the national scene.

NME-E: Tell us a little about your releases to date?

MC: 'Destruccion Creative' in 2007, before Antonio and I joined the band, 'En Marte' in 2008 and 'Carrusel' also 2008.

NME-E: If you could choose a band/artist to support you, who would it be?
MC: It would have to be Death Cab for Cutie.

NME-E thinks that would be a splendid line-up.

NME-E: What's your favourite album at the moment?
MC: Jason Mraz's 'We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things'... and before that I couldn't stop listening to "Lucky" by Nada Surf.

NME-E: Finally, tell us about your objectives/prospects for next 12 months.

MC: We're going back into the studio in August (probably) to record our 4th EP and then back on the road. Our objective right now is to be able to make a living with this, and we think we're slowly getting there, building an audience from the ground up. It's hard work, but very satisfying, especially when everyone in the team is so committed.

Miss Caffeina are certainly going about things in the right way. Working hard and slowly making a name for themselves. Most importantly, they have a stock of seriously good tracks, meaning the future can most definitely be a bright one.

NME-E would like to thank Román and the lads for talking to us. Most of you will have to make do with a listen to the tracks on their myspace page. However, if Murcia is within reaching distance of your house, you could do a lot worse than see them live tonight (Friday 8th) in the Garaje de la Tia Maria. 10€ on the door is money well spent - Anyone fancy a spot of babysitting?!
