Myspace Magic: The Fall Of Kings

The first Myspace Magic of the new season - surprise, surprise - features a band from Liverpool. Another find from the city of sound, a quartet who claim to belong to their self-proclaimed epic rock genre. Read on to discover more...

NME-E Who are you and how did you come about?
FOK: Making up The Fall Of Kings are Dan (Guitar and Vocals), Dave (Bass and Background Vocals), Joe (Keys and Backing Vocals) and Nathan (Drums, percussion and shouting). Dan and Nathan went to school together and were in a band called Beggars Belief for a few years. When that broke up in late 2007 they decided to form another band using a load of songs Dan had been writing. Joe is Dan's younger brother so he was roped in to tickle the ivories and Dave was a mutual music lover with an affection for all things "bassey and groovesome." So in December 2007 'The F.O.K' was born - Hurrah!

NME-E: Is there a reason behind your name?

FOK: No real reason, we just wanted something that sounded a bit different (not a standard run-of-the-mill "The" name) but also sounded quite provocative. It was a few years ago over a few (well many) whiskies in our local watering hole that Dan, Joe and a fellow musical collaborator known as "the Beard" stumbled upon the phrase "The Fall Of Kings." Now to us it means sort of an end to hierarchy and the beginning of true equality for us human folk - we can dream, can't we?

NME-E: Describe your sound.

FOK: This is the question most bands struggle with. We've tried to coin a new phrase (at least I think it's new - it may not be) to describe our music. "Epic Rock" seems to sum it up nicely; we just want each song to blow your face off whilst rocking you into a gentle slumber and making you do the fandango all at the same time.

I thought I'd invented that term! It's the sort of term I use for groups like Embrace when they get (or used to, at least) all sentimental and grandiose.

NME-E: What are your releases to date?
FOK: As yet we've had no official releases but we put together a little demo in 2008 and then we came to record an EP type thingy in February this year in Parr Street - which was nice. We're not really releasing it, just flogging it at our gigs to anyone who wants one. It's self titled with 4 studio tracks and a Live song at the end that was recorded in a Radio session and it turned out really well. We're concentrating on the live scene at the moment really cos that's what it's all about. When we do come to release something you'll be amongst the first to know.

You can check out the tracks on the band's myspace. There are six tracks available on their profile. Personally, I'd pick 'Good Blood' as my favourite - it's a real grower. However, the demo version of 'The Hands Of Many' also shows tremendous potential.

NME-E: If you could choose a band/artist to support you, who would it be and why?
FOK: There is a great Liverpool 7 piece band called "We The Undersigned" who are awesome. They've got a brass section and everything. It's also the band our good friend "The Beard" plays with. Their songs are awesome and they're all characters so with there being 7 of them you can be sure there'll be a party. Check them out.

Will do!

NME-E: What's your favourite album at the moment?

FOK: Too many to mention really - Stuff like Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds' 'Dig Lazarus Dig' or The Maccabees' 'Wall Of Arms' are regularly on our CD player. The Virgins new album is pretty fun too despite them having an awful name. We also happened upon Sky Larkin just the other day and they're damn good so we'll be getting their album 'Golden Spike'. We recently got into Radiohead's 'In Rainbows' too even though it's been out for a while; plus you can never get tired of MGMT's 'Oracular Spectacular', it's just listening greatness.

Still not entirely sold on MGMT (am I the only one?) but Sky Larkin has already been given the nme-e thumbs up.

NME-E: Tell us about your objectives/prospects for next 12 months?
FOK: We just want to keep pushing ourselves and see what crazy new sounds and grooves we can come out with. We really want to perfect our harmonies and backing vocals too and get everyone in the band singing away. The main focus is to keep gigging and gigging here, there and everywhere. We haven't even been on the live scene for a year yet so we want to get ourselves out there and get in people's faces - in a good way. You can never have too much coverage which is why stuff like this interview is great. Great job with the website by the way, keep up the sterling work.

Ooh, you're gonna make me go red! With bands like F.O.K on the scene, creating a decent website is not difficult. It's my pleasure to spread the word and recommend everyone checks out yet another top nme-e find.

Thanks go to The Fall Of Kings for taking the time to speak to nme-e. Please check them out, they're definitely worth a go! And if you're in Liverpool on wednesday night (16th) you can check them out live at the Korova. The show starts at 8pm and only costs 3 quid.
