From the very start of Muse's much-anticipated fifth studio album 'The Resistance' you are aware that this is quite simply the complete aural experience, which confirms their status as top dogs on Planet Rock.
Maintaining a similar line to 'Absolution', the latest offering presents us with an intriguing blend of ear-blasting symphonic rock - opening tracks 'Uprising' and 'Resistance' take you aback with their swirling, hypnotic guitar arrangements coupled with an addictive baseline - before we set off on a melodic, almost operatic journey. It's as if Jeff Lynne had started writing songs for Queen at times - see United States Of Eurasia / Collateral Damage' - and the effect is amazing, largely in part to Matt Bellamy's outstanding vocals and a myriad of musical arrangements.
The pinnacle, for me is 'Unnatural Selection', a track which seems to sum up the album perfectly. A 7 minute roller-coaster of a song whose delightful melodies are savagely interrupted by the raunchiest of riffs.
'MK Ultra' is the final battering on the eardrums ahead of the symphony 'Exogenesis', a three part adventure, which some will see as over-elaborate, others as pure genius. I'll let you judge for yourselves.
What is clear is that The Resistance will not go unnoticed and NME-E is glad to have taken the ride.
